Google Site

I was not sure what this assignment was since there was not an address on the assignment sheet, so this post is out of order. For this assignment I went to Google, and signed in to my account. I clicked the drop down menu for more and chose sites. I used a classroom template to set up a class web page. I had some difficulty changing and deleting existing information, but think I got the idea of creating a web page and how easy it can be. The problem lies in that a classroom website is not feasible for me because I work in the corrections setting. My students are not able to access the internet, and we have little contact with parents. To view my website click here, it was used using google.

The NETS standards this assignment covered were:
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation
c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging

This assignment hit on this standard perfectly, whether you created a class website, or an informational one it communicates information using digital media and format, and demonstrates that we as educators can transfer our knowledge to actually create something, not just discuss the importance of technology by verbally teaching how to use it with out showing its applicable uses.

Assessment Forms

I went to google docs and clicked create new, you get the option of spreadsheet and forms. The youtube video showed that you go to spreadsheets, and then click forms. I did that first, then I checked what going to forms would do, and it takes you to the same thing. Then you can start creating your own form. It can be multiple choice, checked boxes, fill in, and more. I published my form by clicking share and choosing publish as a web page. To view it click here. When I published in the above manner, my publish document just looked like a spreadsheet, so when I edited the document at the bottom of the page was a link to publish. I highlighted and copied the address to my blog. My assessment form is to be used in my Literature class. My students come and go so quickly that I can't follow a textbook in order, so to see what type of Literature and skills my students feel they need to cover could be very beneficial.
NETS:
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

Rubistar Rubric

In my classroom after reading The Most Dangerous Game I give the students a menu assignment where they choose their project. They can make a brochure the main character would have used to lure people to the island, a poster of the traps used that Rainsford used to escape and a description of each, or a map of the island based on description from the text. Each assignment has explicit instructions or requirements but I would use the same rubric for grading all projects. I used a template on rubistar for posters and tweaked it a bit. I then downloaded the finished rubric and uploaded to google docs. To view my rubric click here.

Organizing tools article

I just read the organizing tools article, and can see the benefit of having a web page for public school teachers. It would be a beneficial way to integrate technology and make communication between home and school more convenient. It also makes learning in the classroom relevant to the real world. In my classroom however, we have no student computers, and I have no contact with parents unless concerning special education services. If I were a public school teacher, I would set up a classroom website with a summary of each weeks learning, links to resources to reinforce skills taught, even samples of students work for parents to view.

Intel tools

I created a visual ranking project using Intel tools that I could use in my current classroom for my life skills class. We are currently working on a chapter dealing with employment, so I created a project where they have to rank what is most important in finding and obtaining employment. This is a topic students of their age need to be thinking of, all the steps are important, but what is most important. We will discuss group responses and why they order the way they did.

podcast post #2

I could integrate my new found skill of podcasting in several ways. As I mentioned in the previous post I would like using it during independent work so students are constantly reinforced. The second way this could be used is if I were to be absent, instead of leaving generic work as teachers usually do for substitute teachers, I could have a podcast prepared and do as I would normally for my lessons. In my classroom, I could not use this as an assignment for the students to do. The reason is that because it is an institutional setting our students are very restricted when it comes to using the internet. If I could use it I would incorporate it into assignments such as essay writing, and have the students create a podcast of their essay and post online. How would I store and save my podcast to use within my classroom is save it as a .wav file in audacity and play straight from the computer using windows media player.
My podcast covered different grade level cso's because my classroom is made of multi-grade levels. The content standards are as follows:
M.O.G.3.16 derive and justify formulas for perimeter, area, surface area, and volume using nets and apply them to solve real world problems.
M.O.7.4.1 select and apply appropriate method to solve justify the method and the reasonableness of the solution, given a real world problem solving situation involving perimeter, circumference, area, surface area of prisms, volume of prisms and cylinders, distance and temperature.
M.O.7.4.3 convert units of measurement, linear, area and volume, within customary and metric systems.
M.O.8.3.6 make and test a conjecture concerning regular polygons, the cross section of a soch as a cylinder, cone, and pyramid, the intersection of two or more geometric figure in the plane and justify the results.

podcast

For this assignment we used audacity to create a podcast. I had great difficulty with this assignment, first off I have children so it is very hard to have absolute silence, secondly I made my podcast too long so it was too many mega bytes to upload to podbean. I went back and cut out the section on volume, and where I actually tell the cso's. Although this was difficult for me I see that it could be useful, it could be played often during the unit while students are working, because the more you hear something the more you remember. The technology standards this assignment covered were:

Prezi

I found this assignment very frustrating. We had to go to prezi.com and create a new type of presentation. I watched the tutorial even tried to find additional help, but couldn't not grasp the functionality of the program. I did the best I could but every time I clicked show, it didn't look right. So to view my prezi online click here. This assignment could be useful if I master it in a classroom for just about anything. It is similar to powerpoint, but does away with the linear structure. So it would be really good for use in science, or literature where flow charts and diagrams can be used.
3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information
resources to support research and learning
This technology is very new, and from what I read it can't be saved to your computer, and can't upload powerpoint slides other than images. This assignment allowed us to transfer current knowledge about presentational tools to new technology, and we used this emerging tool to present information.
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS•S. Teachers:
a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress
c. customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
Because the instructions on this assignment were very vague it allowed us as students to use our own creativity, also allowed us to assess our own progress, because the format is so versatile our presentation could look very different from examples provided, and lastly this activity addressed our abilities using digital tools and resources, because not only were we using this very new type of presentation, but also had to know to save power point slides as images, or use the snipping tool, and how to embed our presentation into our blog. This assignment definitely touched on a lot of substandards.

Get Video

I had difficulty getting this to work. I tried several programs, and downloaded an flv player. I used a website,www.keepvid.com. On this website, you paste the address in the bar provided and click download. The site provides a link, and get the option to save, or open with. I saved it, and it didn't give me the option to save as a flv. file. It immediately began to download. I went to my videos and clicked on it, and it opened with windows media player. The file properties say it is a 3GPP audio/video. I had tried several other sites, and when I w ould click get download url, it would say error.
This could video could be used for a literature class, but this assignment would benefit a teacher in any subject area and all grade levels. The reason being there are numerous clips that could be used and if saved to a teacher's own computer they'll always have them for their unit.
The NETS standards that this assignment meets are:
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
d. provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and technology standards and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching
This assignment let us use the resulting information from our attempt at saving a you-tube video to our computer to inform our teaching. If there is a video we use frequently in a certain unit, this allowed us a method to have it in the far future in the case it is removed from the you-tube site. It also provided a summative assessment in that there were many different ways it could be done.

Photo story

This assignment was fun, and fairly easy. I asked Dr. Pierce if I could do one on my kids and he said it was OK, he just wanted to see if we could use the program. I downloaded the program on the second try. Uploading pictures was very easy, as was adding text and music. I loved this assignment because doing the same thing in power point is much more time consuming.

The NETS standard I feel this assignments suits best is :

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes
d. model collaborative knowledge construction by engaging in learning with students, colleagues, and others in face-to-face and virtual

We were provided several models to look at before we began, we can reflect and discuss through our blogs, and the discussion board, and the collaborative knowledge construction happens on every assignment because we explain what standard the particular assignment addresses for the collaboration of the final project.

Another standard it addressed is : 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning
Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers:
a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
b. collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success
and innovation
c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information
resources to support research and learning

This could be used in a Language Arts class where the students are asked to write a personal narrative, and create a photo story to accompany it.

video

I used the power point I created for the ignite assignment. I did not have a you tube account so that was the first thing I had to do. I then downloaded Microsoft movie maker. Once all that was done the rest was easy. I saved the slides as images and drug them over to the movie maker program. The last thing I did was set it to music. When the movie was done, I clicked the you tube icon in the movie program to share. I copied the embed code and you can see the movie below

Or you can go to you tube by clicking here.

The standard I feel this assignment addressed was 2 substandard b: develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress

All assignments have fit this, but I felt this especially did because the professor gave minimal instructions. It allowed us to explore the movie maker program and decide what features we wanted to use, and to explore one of the web 2.0 resources we had yet to be introduced to in this course. We set our own goals in that we were not restricted to number of slides, time of movie, and effects we could use.

jeopardy

I am currently teaching a unit on the novella Of Mice and Men. I found a power point that I could use in creating my jeopardy game, the address is teacherweb.com/MA/BCAHS/Noel/OfMiceandMenpowerpoint.ppt If you click here it will take you to the presentation. The content standards RLA.0.9.1.08, 10.1.01, 12.1.01,10.1.04, are addressed in the presentation. I will be creating my game and uploading in a later post!

I created my jeopardy game using the power point linked in the previous post. I had little trouble creating it, but did have questions with the delay in showing links visited. The professor said that it was a kink with the template and all was OK. So if you would like to view my power point or use it for your own unit on Of Mice and Men click here.

The standard I felt this assignment best suited was 3 substandard d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information resources to support research and learning We not only had to create a power point, we did so using resources that already existed. The template, and power point had to be analyzed and evaluated; the process supported our learning in that we realized technology can ease our workload, because a lot of things we need have already been created, and we were able to share ours with the world as well.

Animation2

I did not realize there were two animation assignments. So I am a little late. I hope I understood the assignment correctly. We were to use powerpoint, and use the animation of motion path along with a button. My animation is available if you click here. The technology standard used here is standard one and all sub standards. We used digital tools to display our creativity, such as the slide itself, our blog, and learning to use the ftp site.

I have my animation, but am struggling with getting the right address to have it on ftp site. Here is what I have so click here to view. If this doesn't work please leave a comment.

Wordle 2

1. Facilitate and Inspire Student Learning and Creativity
Teachers use their knowledge of subject matter, teaching and learning, and technology to facilitate experiences that advance student learning, creativity, and innovation in both face-to-face and virtual environments. Teachers:
a. promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness
2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments

a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity

These standards were covered for the wordle assignment, because it was a creative way to make a word splash of topics. It could be used in any subject area, not using tags but typing in relevant words to a unit and creating a wordle.

c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
d. model and facilitate effective use of current and emerging digital tools to locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information
resources to support research and learning

This assignment covered many standards. You had to be creative to get your point across in the given format, by posting it for the world to see on google docs, or slide share it was a way of communicating information to community, and posting on our blogs and the discussion boards about the assignment is a form of collaboration with other students, and our professor.

Ignite presentation

I did a new presentation. This one is stressing the importance of using web 2.0 in the classroom. To view it on slide share click here. It changed my font again, and am wondering if there is a way to fix this????

Wednesday, February 17, 2010

google embed

My pictures under what makes an outsider are suppose to come in one at a time and then exit, but it doesn't let the transitions work.
Standards:
1c. promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning,
and creative processes
2a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity
3a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
4d. develop and model cultural understanding and global awareness by engaging with colleagues and students of other cultures using
digital-age communication and collaboration tools
This assignment as all have allowed us to use collaborative tools such as the blog, discussion board, google docs to reflect on our learning. We had to design a powerpoint and learn how to embed it in our blog which promoted student learning and our own individual creativity. To demonstrate our fluency with technology we had to know how to use power point, and to publish to google docs. Our new learning was learning how to embed. When we publish to google docs, or use our blogs we have the capabilities to engage with people from other cultures since it is out there for the world.

Power Point Redo

I changed my power point so there was less text on each slide. Still disappointed that slide share doesn't show my transitions, and it changed my font. To view click here.

google imbed

powerpoint

I published my powerpoint to slide share. I am very disappointed the font I used, and the transition for my pictures aren't present and it really affects the display. I did my power point as an activator for the novel "The Outsiders", if you would like to see it click here.

Wordle

I went to the address on the assignment sheet. I used the tags in my delicious account to create a wordle. The site created a web page of the wordle, and if you click here it will take you to the image. I typed the code the internet site provided in order to post the image, then when I went back and used the snipping tool, then when back to my post the code disappeared and the image automatically appeared. This is a cool tool for activating strategy for key words in a unit, or for vocabulary.

Jing 2 sceencast

I tried to do my screen cast like the example provided since I was at a loss what I could teach on a screen cast that didn't deal with computers. I teach at a facility that doesn't have student computers. I tried to teach someone how to publish using Google docs. I had some snags, but I think the point would still get a cross to someone watching. Click here to see my screen cast.
Standards:
3a. demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations
3c. communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats
I feel these standards were the best for this assignment. Others were covered as well. In this assignment since you are teaching someone to use technology we had to have fluency in the program we are demonstrating. The new technology was using jings screencast feature. This program allowed us to communicate information effectively. It is difficult to verbally describe the process of what to do when using technology, with this program students or peers can visually see what needs to be done, which is very effective.

Jing

This is my second attempt at the assignment using jing. In the first post I created it strictly using jing, using the tools for that program. In this assignment I used jing, then took the save image and used it in paint. I felt that using the snip tool would be much easier, using jing took to much off the web site, and it took a lot of editing in paint to get the exact image I want.

Jing

Okay, I will probably be doing another post on this assignment because I feel that mine looks nothing like the examples provided by the professor. However, it is what the tutorial showed. So I captured an image the prison that was one of the major settings in Alexander Dumas The Count of Monte Cristo. My class is reading the abbreviated version currently for Literature class. The link above will take you to the image but here is the image uploaded to our blog as the assignment says to do.

This activity was fun, and short. I had difficulty creating hair, was wondering if you can draw on the canvas instead of just clicking on pre-made shapes of facial features. When I had my portrait finished I clicked save/email. I went to my email and retrieved the link, then tried to right click and save. It wouldn't allow me to do this. I then thought now what am I supposed to do. That is when I realized I could use the snipping tool to complete the assignment. I have learned something!! Here is the portrait I created. The site I used was the one provided by our professor, if you click here it will take you to the site.

Second graph for 2/5 assignment

http://docs.google.com/View?id=dgdbxnm2_7fcpxgtg6
This is the link to my second published document comparing eighth grade scores in reading to that of the national average. The link to the NCES site, and Kid Zone are in my previous post.

First of two graphing assignments

The above links are first the google document with my bar graph, secondly the site where the statistics came from, and lastly the site where you can create a graph. This activity consisted of analyzing data for WV from one of the core subject areas to the scores of the national average. The third link is a site where you can select what type of graph best suits the data you are trying to display. The assignment no only ask you to create a graph from the data, but to look for trends in the data, and explain those trends.

Draw Something

On the previous post the type of image is PNG and can be opened with windows photo viewer, this is according to properties when I right clicked on the image I saved.

Draw something

I chose to use paint, not out of preference, but because I do not have the Microsoft office package. I also found on previous assignments that I couldn't import from works, that I had to put the snip, or print screen in paint. I use the box tool on the paint tool bar to draw the box, I used the snip feature to cut out things to symbolize each of the tools introduced to us through this class. I used the text feature to type the order that we used these tools, and the title for the class. My import was 46.4 KB and 1100x518 PX.

more detailed line graph

As I said on the previous post I used a different site for my statistics. I couldn't find that information on the site provided by Dr. Pierce. Here is the more detailed graph. It can be fond on the same website listed in previous post.

Line graph

I used the website www.edweek.org/rc/articles/2009/01/21/sow0121.h27.html to get the information on per student expenditure. Pennsylvania had 11, 252, WV had 11,150, Fl had 8,437 and TX had 7,561. I had each line on the y axis represent 2,000. The problem was I couldn't find out how to type that in. My graph is located here.

Graphic image-Sorry trying the same post again just trying to get the link as a word and not the address. So this is the same image a flow chart, created in microsoft word. I used the shapes tool, and inserted arrows and text boxes to create a graphic organizer to help students remember the process for writing.

graphic image

I thought I would create a flow chart of the writing process with an outline below. I chose Microsoft word because I am most familiar with it. I used the shapes tool on the main tool bar to insert arrows. You can rotate the arrows using the green rotate handle when you place the image. I then inserted text boxes to place the text in a circular fashion. Lastly I inserted word art for the heading of the graphic organizer. The program will open in Microsoft word. I use teacher created images all the time, such as demonstrating fractions, a t-chart for percents, and more. The size of my file according to google docs is 1024mb, or 13.4K. When I published to Google documents the graphics weren't there. Please comment if you can view the page in its entirety. Click here.

You Tube Questions

Three steps to get started with delicious are: go to delicious.com, add buttons to browser to add bookmarks, and be social.

Social bookmarking is public other people can see what we bookmark on our delicious account, because it is a website. It is easier to use because it is accesible on any computer instead of just one, and tags make the sites we frequently visit easier to find then having to search through a long lists of favorites.

Print screen image

To get my print screen to work, I pasted the image into paint. After that when I went to my blog I just inserted the image.

another snip

Snipping tool/snip from percent site

I did the search to find my snipping tool. Once I did it boxed in too much, I only wanted the picture not the text. So to edit I just highlighted what I didn't want and hit delete. I was able to paste it right into the blog box.

introduction

My name is Marcie Cumberledge, I am a teacher at the West Virginia Industrial Home for Youth. I hope taking this class will help me become a better teacher, applying technology into all my lessons.

Navigating Dr. Pierce's course

I am wondering already if I will get through this course. Also if this is where we are suppose to make comments instead of the discussion page on blackboard.
